This Amazon Tiny House’s Sturdy Construction Is Designed to Withstand Typhoons

I’ve spent more than a few hours virtually touring tiny houses on YouTube, so when I discovered that you can actually purchase one at Amazon, I stopped shopping for seasonal home decor and started searching the site for portable residences instead (if you like to spend your free time on Zillow, I highly recommend this activity).

My latest discovery is a 20-foot option from tiny home builder Elite Nest, and the listing highlights a feature I’ve never seen before while looking at houses on Amazon. Apparently, this structure is designed to hold up in a typhoon, so if you’re thinking about relocating to eastern Japan, China, or the Philippines—where typhoons are most common—you might want to invest in one of these prefabricated homes.

What makes the tiny house so sturdy? For starters, it’s built around a steel plate frame with sandwich panel walls coated in steel. This insulation, which is also used in the roof, is fire-resistant and keeps outside temperatures from permeating your living quarters. The SPC flooring allows for greater impact resistance, so it’s better equipped to handle sudden shocks, and the aluminum doors and windows can withstand high winds. Still, the home weighs just 8,800 pounds, which is comparable to other tiny house weights I’ve seen.

Even if you don’t live in a location where tropical storms are a possibility, this Elite Nest model is a nice option for anyone seeking a portable home that they can disassemble and move any time they want. There are two bedrooms, a bathroom with a sliding glass shower door, a living room, and a kitchenette that’s big enough to accommodate a double sink and a slim yet tall refrigerator.

The tiny house is preassembled with electrical wiring and plumbing, including hot and cold water, a kitchen drain, and bathroom drainage. According to the builder’s website, the structure is shipped in pieces via containers and takes as little as seven hours to put together. The purported lifespan of this particular model is 30+ years, so you might be able to traverse the entire country with this home.
