Pink might be an unexpected or even nerve-wracking, front door color choice, but not for Emily Welch, a home and holiday social media influencer. Welch, a lifelong lover of pink, said when she moved into a new home, she instantly knew what she wanted to do with the front door.
“As soon as I saw the pretty details of the original front door, I’m like, ‘This has got to be pink,'” she says. Painted first in Sweety Pink by HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams and most recently Mellow Coral by Sherwin-Williams, the front door has become somewhat of a calling card for Welch, making frequent appearances on her Instagram and TikTok. And we can’t get enough of the blushing shade of pink.
Why Pink Is So Popular (On Front Doors and Beyond)
So why is Welch’s pink front door so loved? She has a theory. “People just love it because it’s so bright and happy,” she says. Of her nearly half a million followers on social media, Welch says Gen Z likes her pink door the most, with younger audiences shifting toward bright colors after the takeover of Millennial gray.
“Me contemplating painting the whole red house a different color so the front door can be pink,” says one TikTok user in Welch’s comment section. Another says, “I’ve never even liked pink that much, but now I think my whole life needs to be pink.” Even Sherwin-Williams showed love for Welch’s color choice. “It’s your pink world, and we’re just living in it,” the brand said in a comment.
While color trends come and go, Welch says she’s long embraced pink. “I feel like I was always [into] pink unless I’m trying to be different for something,” she says. “I think I just gave up and embraced it ever since college.”
Tips for Choosing Front Door Colors
Welch’s number one tip for decorating with bright and unexpected colors like pink is to go for a shade you know you won’t regret. “I would go with a color you know you love, like pink for me,” she says.
Welch once decided to change the color of her front door to mustard yellow, but it didn’t turn out the way she hoped. “I hated it. I immediately hated it,” she says. “I was trying to do something different. I’m like, ‘This is not my house. Who lives here?’” Although her followers liked the yellow door, she quickly re-painted it pink. “I know I’m not going to change my mind about pink,” Welch says.
Another factor when choosing a front door paint color? Your favorite ways to decorate for the season. Welch’s pink and sage color scheme translates well throughout all seasons, accented with pumpkins in various shades of orange and cream in the fall. “I even added blush into my traditional Christmas with the green and the red because I think blush goes with red well,” Welch says.
Welch’s Go-To Colors
Welch recommends designing your space with three colors in mind. That way, when you’re deciding on a paint color or piece of furniture, you can go with the one that best matches this trio. For Welch, go-to colors include pink, sage, and yellow, with accents of brown and terra-cotta. While brighter tones can be overwhelming, Welch says warm, soft shades, like blush and sage, are becoming neutrals.
For those who prefer a more natural look, turn to sage green. White, black, brown, and cream all pair well with a muted green color. Welch says greenery and plants are another great way to add color to an otherwise neutral space.
